Matilda Isabella Creasy 1852 is a reproduction of a stunning original sampler in our collection from Suffolk, in the East of England.  It contains the Christmas carol ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ as the verse, beautiful flower motifs, a swan, a cow, a squirrel, birds, crowns, flags and all manner of other features.

The pattern is 318 x 256 stitches and is mostly full crosses over 2 but also includes four-sided stitch, Algerian eyelets and over one, meaning it would not be suitable for stitching on Aida.  Our model is stitched using 1 strand of floss on 36ct 'Foglifter' from R & R Reproductions.  We have used Weeks Dye Works threads for our reproduction but we also include a DMC conversion in our PDF downloads.  The design area on 36ct fabric measures approximately 17 5/8" x 14 1/4" (44.8 x 36.2cm).

The PDF downloads include both a symbol only and colour version of the chart along with a sizing guide for a variety of fabric counts.  We were able to trace Matilda in the records and her story is also included with the charts.  Upon purchase you will have access to both A4 (UK) and letter (US) formats to account for local printing standards.

This sampler is full of unique elements, many of which stand up as designs in their own right.  I have previously released a drum pattern taking a few of Matilda's motifs as inspiration that you can see here - Matilda's drum

Please note: Our PDFs are not e-mailed to you, you can either download the files immediately after payment from the webpage or follow the ‘Download Files’ link (highlighted in blue) from the Order Confirmation e-mail you will receive.

We cannot offer returns, exchanges or cancellations but please do contact us if you have any problems at all with an order or require any other assistance.  Any quirks in the pattern are Matilda's but any mistakes are my own!

    An amazing sample

I am obsessed with stitching this sampler. The colors are absolutely amazing and make me want to stay at my frame all day. The chart is thorough and easy to read and use. The over one is not for the faint of heart but to have a Christmas Carol as a verse is so unusual that I knew I had to stitch it no matter what. Thank for another delightful stitch.

Just stunning! I completed the drum and look forward to kit this one up. The history behind the sampler is so touching. I also would love to make a trip to visit the church and gravesite of Matilda. Christine this is just an awsome sampler. Thank you for bringing it to publication.
